After filmschool, Reitemeier completed an internship at a film laboratory (Atlantic Film Hamburg), followed by many years as camera-assistant in both feature and documentary film areas where he worked with directors including Werner Herzog and Roland Emmerich. Together with Karl Walter Lindenlaub, in 1990 he assisted his fellow Swabian Emmerich on his last German film to date, Moon 44. Later he worked as camera-assistant to Jörg Schmidt-Reitwein. Since 1994, Reitemeier has worked as a cameraman. Among his first works is the film Die Überlebenden (The Survivors) from Andres Veiel.
In 1998 Reitemeier first visited China, to film Solveig Klassen’s documentary Jenseits von Tibet – Eine Liebe zwischen den Welten (Beyond Tibet – A Love between the Worlds).. Three further documentaries followed in the People’s Republic. During the 2000 Berlinale (The Berlin Film Festival), he encountered the director Wang Quan’an at a Chinese New Year’s reception. Two years later the duo presented their first feature The Story of Ermei. Reitemeier’s third Chinese feature, and his second collaboration with Wang Quan’an, became Tuya’s Wedding, a film made with lay actors from Mongolia.
It won the Golden Bear, the main prize at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival.
In 2010 came Tuan Yuan; which opened the Berlinale, and garnered that year’s Silver Bear. Besides his feature work, Reitemeier also works in various documentary genres, with, among others, Julian Benedikt, Tamara Wyss, Michael Hofmann and Gordian Maugg. In 2012 he was awarded the Silver Bear for outstanding artistic achievement for his camera work on Bai lu yuan (White Deer Plain).
